I am an artist

Rodrigo Tello

I am an artist. I make art. I don't work in the Art Industry though, nor I am involved in the Art World. I'm not an art worker, critic, curator, administrator, or researcher. Professionally, meaning the activity I get paid for to do from 9 to 5, I'm a designer, a user-interface designer, which means I design software, which I means I design apps and websites, how they look and how we interact with them. So I'm not a professional artist, but I am an artist.

I didn't study art. I studied architecture. However, I'm not an architect but I am an artist. My daily job is closer to being an architect than an artist, since an architect is a form of designer. I did took some drawing and painting classes as a kid, like many kids do. I also took swimming classes and piano classes, but I'm not a swimmer nor a pianist. I do know how to swim, and I do know how to play the piano.

My work, meaning what I do as a job, can have art in it, so in a way I do put my art in my work. It can be artistic, but that doesn't make it art, just like someone being friendly with you in the street doesn't make them your friend.

I paint, but that doesn't make me an artist. Painting is not necessarily making art, but it can be - if I or whoever is painting says so. I also draw, quite often. I've been drawing all my life, but I'm not sure I've been an artist all my life.

I've sold my art services in the past. I've sold paintings, which technically made me, for a short period of time, a professional artist. I don't know if I can call myself a professional artist anymore, but I am an artist, definitely.

I'm also a musician, I make music. I play guitar, piano, some percussion, and electronic instruments. I've never played professionally either, but I've might have had 1 or 2 gigs in my life where someone paid for music production, usually through some other project, like video production or software production. Playing instruments doesn't make me an artist automatically, but being a musician does. Music is an art, so I think that being a musician makes me and anyone an artist too.

I don't make art every day. I might not even make art every year. Years have went by where I don't paint anything.
